Senior / Principal Data Scientist - AI & Advanced Analytics

5-Month Contract - Mining | Perth, WA

This opportunity offers the chance to join a large-scale, owner-operated mining organisation with one of Australia's most advanced iron ore operations. The business operates an integrated mine, rail, and port network and is recognised for its focus on technology-led optimisation, automation, and data-driven decision-making.

You will play a senior specialist role developing and deploying AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics solutions that directly support operational performance across mining, processing, and logistics. This is a hands-on position suited to an experienced data science leader who can operate at both a technical and strategic level while partnering closely with operational stakeholders.

This role suits a Senior, Lead, or Principal-level Data Scientist who can hit the ground running, take ownership of enterprise-scale AI initiatives, and influence how advanced analytics is embedded across a large mining operation.

Essential Qualifications & Experience
• Extensive experience in a data science, advanced analytics, or AI-focused role
• Demonstrated experience working in the mining industry with operational datasets
(e.g. fleet management systems, historians, SAP, delay accounting)
• Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics
• Strong proficiency in Python (or similar) for statistical modelling and machine learning
• Proven experience delivering solutions on Azure-based data and analytics platforms
• Solid experience with data lakes, SQL, Spark, ML frameworks, and data visualisation tools
(e.g. Power BI)
• Experience developing and supporting enterprise-scale AI solutions, including
large language models
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex insights to
non-technical stakeholders

Desirable Skills & Experience
• Postgraduate qualification in a quantitative or mining-related discipline
• Experience with Databricks and modern MLOps / DevOps pipelines
• Exposure to deep learning frameworks and advanced AI techniques
• Experience with NLP and other advanced AI use cases
• Participation in data science competitions or industry hackathons
(e.g. Unearthed or similar)

Duties & Responsibilities
• Develop, deploy, and support AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics solutions
• Ensure solutions are robust, supportable, well-documented, and production-ready
• Apply best-practice source control, modelling, and MLOps approaches
(e.g. Git, MLflow)
• Monitor, maintain, and improve Azure-based analytics platforms
• Work iteratively with business stakeholders to validate models and insights
• Translate complex analytical outcomes into clear, business-friendly recommendations
• Support and influence the broader adoption of AI and advanced analytics across
the organisation
• Stay current with emerging analytics and AI technologies and recommend improvements
• Contribute technical leadership and specialist expertise to high-impact initiatives
