We are seeking an experienced Lead SMP Designer to support a Design manager and help drive the delivery of brownfields and sustaining capital projects across the minerals sector. It is a leadership-focused position for someone who can coordinate people, scope, schedules, and design intent, ensuring work is delivered efficiently and to a high standard.
The successful candidate will act as the design integrator and team lead, sitting between engineering and design, and ensuring the right work is done by the right people at the right time. Essential Skills & Experience:
- 7+ years' experience in SMP / Mechanical design
- Proven experience leading or coordinating small teams
- Strong mechanical design foundation with working knowledge of piping and structural
- Piping strength is advantageous but not mandatory (complements existing capability)
- Experience across materials handling and mineral processing projects
- Software experience with Bentley OpenPlant / OpenBuildings and/or Autodesk Plant 3D
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate the production of SMP modelling and drafting deliverables
- Manage and support a team of designers/drafters, delegating work effectively
- Ensure design intent, scope, and interfaces are clearly understood and delivered
- Drive project progress, monitor schedules, and correct misalignment or blind spots
- Act as the key design interface with engineering, clarifying requirements and resolving gaps
- Support layout development, optioneering, and system-level design decisions
- Forecast workload and resource requirements in collaboration with the Design Manager
- Review work in progress and completed deliverables to maintain quality and consistency
- Remove barriers for the team and escalate issues where required
