Your Mid-Year Engineering Career Check-In: 5 Questions to Ask Yourself

Back to Blogs

We're now over halfway through the year - so, how’s your career tracking?

If you’re like many senior engineers, you've likely been head-down delivering results, solving problems and pushing through projects. But now is the perfect time to pause, zoom out and ask yourself a few important questions.

Below is a quick and practical self-assessment to help you recalibrate your goals, measure your satisfaction and decide whether it's time to make a move or stay where you are.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself to Grow your Engineering Career in 2025

1. Am I still learning or have I hit a plateau?

  • Are you being challenged technically?

  • Have you been exposed to any new technologies, systems or processes in the last 6 months?

If your answer is “not really,” it might be time to seek out stretch projects or explore roles that offer growth.

2. Is my role aligned with the projects I want to be known for?

  • Are you building the type of experience that will position you well for future roles?

  • Are you proud to put these projects on your CV?

Think about where the industry is going - electrification, automation, renewables, battery minerals - and whether you're involved in those shifts.

3. How is my work-life balance, really?

  • Are rosters, travel time and overtime sustainable?

  • Do you feel burned out or energised?

Fatigue is normal in engineering, but if your current workload is negatively impacting your personal life or health, it's worth reconsidering your work set up.

4. Do I feel recognised and valued?

  • Does leadership acknowledge your contributions?

  • Have you had a pay rise, promotion or solid feedback this year?

If you’ve grown but your role hasn’t, it could be a sign you’ve outgrown your position.

5. If a great opportunity was to come up tomorrow, would I take the call?

  • Gut check: Would you even be open to hearing about it?

  • Or are you completely content for now?

Sometimes we don't realise how ready we are for change until we dig deep and ask ourselves the question.

What to Do with Your Reflection?

If this self-check confirms you're on track, then that’s fantastic! Keep pushing forward and make the most of the rest of the year.

If it raised a few flags? That’s where I come in...
